Behind-the-scenes beauty: real bride Kathryn’s makeover by Latonas Makeup

In the Autumn issue of Queensland Brides we spoke to seven real brides about their wedding-day makeup. Here’s Kathryn’s story – plus beauty guru, Celeste Madden from Latonas Makeup. Read about Monique’s makeover by Kylie’s Professional or Regan’s makeover by Brooklyn Beauty Bar, and look out for more brides’ stories to come.

Kathryn and Lachlan got married on 2 October 2016 at the Cathedral of St Stephen, Brisbane, followed by a reception in the Grand Ballroom at Stamford Plaza.

The bride’s story

Original brief:

“We had a very formal wedding, so I wanted a look to match. I was after simple and elegant hair with structured curls, and natural-looking makeup with smoky eyes
and a bold red lipstick.”

Why did you choose Latonas?
“I met Celeste from Latonas at a wedding expo and was impressed with her work. I’d already decided that I wanted to try air-brushed makeup and I liked the natural look of Latona’s.”

What was it like on the big day?

“So much fun! My four bridesmaids, my mother, mother-in-law and I all had our hair and makeup done, starting at 6am so we’d be ready for photos by 12pm. We had two makeup artists (Celeste and Ashlee), and a hair stylist (Delaine). They were all so professional and well-prepared. It was such a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and it was so nice to be pampered and made to feel so special.”

How did the finished result make you feel?

“Glamorous! Once my hair and makeup was done, I felt for the first time that I was a bride.”

Loveliest compliment on the day?

“It was from a friend, who said they had never seen anyone as happy as I was when I walked down the aisle.”

What was the best tip Celeste gave you?

“Pack a lipstick – there’s a lot of kissing and Champagne drinking on your wedding day and you’ll definitely need to reapply!”

The makeup artist’s story

If you asked Celeste Madden what was her favourite part of a big event, she’d say it’s the ‘getting ready’ process. It’s her love of this ritual that has led her to gain six years as a makeup artist, specialising in bridal makeup with Latonas Makeup.

What did you think when Kathryn told you about her desired look, dress and overall wedding style?

“I loved it. She knew what she wanted and chose a look that suited her and her personal style so well, which I think is really important. When you go with a look that you’re comfortable and familiar with, you’ll enjoy your day so much more as you’ll still feel like you – just your best version of you. Kathryn is chic and glamorous and pulled the look off effortlessly. She told me she’s a regular red-lip wearer and that she wanted more of a red carpet-glam look. She looked amazing.”

Was there a trial run? If so, how was it helpful? Did you make any changes to the original brief?

“Kathryn had a hair and makeup trial with us in store at Latonas. Delaine Foster did her hair and I did her makeup. We spent some time chatting and looking at images Kathryn had brought in for inspiration. We were all really happy with how the trial went and didn’t really make any changes. Trials are a great idea as the bride always feels so much more relaxed on the day when they are already happy with their look and know what they are expecting.”

What was the biggest challenge on the day?

“To be honest their were no real challenges on the day at all. Kathryn and her bridal party were all so lovely and excited – we had a wonderful morning and it all went perfectly. Kathryn was a very easygoing bride.”

What’s the one product you can’t live without and use on every bride?

“An absolute favourite that I use on every bride is a cream blush. It gives such a natural flush that looks like it’s coming from within. I love cream blush.”

What’s the one tip you give every brides on their wedding day?

“Remember to take a step back from things and just enjoy the day – and appreciate having all of your favourite girls in the one place, getting ready together. It’s not often you get your mum, friends and sisters etc. all together in the one place together. I love the getting-ready ritual, always have. I think that’s why I love doing makeup for weddings, as I get to be a part of that.”
