Fiji Honeymoon at Liku Liku

Honeymoon dreams are made of this

Honeymoon // by Nikki Ernst

Picture your dream honeymoon – like me, does your mind drift to an overwater bungalow in a tropical paradise somewhere? You might think Bora Bora or the Maldives are your only choices, but I’ve discovered a super-glam option much closer to home; Likuliku Lagoon Resort in Fiji.

Meaning ‘A place of calm waters,’ this five-star, adults-only resort is home to Fiji’s first over-water bures (cottages), and sits on Malolo Island, part of the Mamanuca Islands.

OVER AND ABOVE

Arrival by helicopter is a brag-worthy way to kick off a holiday of a lifetime. Following a short transfer from Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu, the first glimpse of the resort – with its 10 bures strung over the coral-fringed lagoon – can be described as nothing short of postcard-perfect!

These consciously designed and placed bures offer couples a cocoon of luxury with an endless view of azure, as well as an in-floor glass portal to a living aquarium below.

BEACHFRONT BLISS

Just a few feet from the sheltered lagoon are 18 deluxe beachfront bures – each with their own deck, day bed and plunge pool – or the (not very) standard beachfront or garden bures also make for an ideal honeymoon stay. The resort has been built in the style of an authentic Fijian village, using local hardwoods and pandanus palms thatching, enhanced with stylish Fijian interiors that suggest pure comfort – so much so that you might find yourself wondering, as I did, ‘where is everyone?’.

LAZY DAYS, LUXURIOUS NIGHTS

Your honeymoon is the ultimate excuse to do all or nothing! And, Likuliku caters perfectly to all agendas. With a host of activities available, days are easily filled with snorkelling (there is a healthy array of colour to explore right on the resort’s doorstep), kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, local village tours and couple’s massages in Tatadra Spa – translating to ‘House of Dreams’. Or, if relaxation is top of your to-do list, find yourselves a spot by the resort pool, on the beach, daybed, or your private deck.

There are also island-hopping trips that invite you to snorkel among the coral and fish on beautiful MonuRiki Island. Prepare to do your best Tom Hanks impression – this is where they filmed Cast Away. My ability to greet early mornings is not one of my strongest points (just ask my family and friends!), but the 7am start required for this trip was trumped by the pure invigoration I felt – a feeling that lasted all day long.

For a truly romantic experience, however, why not have Likuliku arrange a private picnic on a secluded island. Hello, honeymoon indulgence.

At day’s end, enjoy watching the sun slip below the horizon while enjoying a cocktail before enjoying a delectable meal in the open-air resort restaurant overlooking the lagoon. Featuring an ever-changing menu, the restaurant showcases the finest local produce and is led by Australian chef, Shane Watson. (Breakfast tip: make sure you try the resort’s signature poached mud crab omelette with chilli and papaya relish.)

Take it from me – and the many couples the world over that flock here –  the beauty of Likuliku allures you in many ways. A perfect destination to create your first magical moments as husband and wife, this island paradise leaves a lasting impression.
