7 tips for the perfect engagement photo session

Your engagement is an exciting time that is worth celebrating and capturing forever – cue a great photographer. Lusting for a beautiful keepsake but starting to feel that little pinch of the penny? Many wedding photographers offer engagement sessions as an inclusion in their wedding photography packages, which is amazing value. Not only that but the images from the session are perfect for save the date cards, invitations and sharing with loved ones (prior to and after your wedding). Three birds, one stone!

To get the photos you’re dreaming of from your engagement photo session; we’ve asked the team behind the lens at Cordare Studio for their top seven tips.

Pick a location that is special to you both

Maybe it’s a place where you often go or activity you love doing together. Your images will mean so much more to you if there’s a personal element. Can’t think of a particular place? Ask your photographer for inspiration! They should chat with you about your personalities and your relationship and be able to then suggest some ideas that are unique to you both.

Create a Pinterest board of images you love

Communication is key to getting what you want, and a picture says a thousand words. Make a Pinterest board of images you love for inspiration for your shoot. Show your photographer and tell them what you love about them. It’ll help the photographer get a better understanding of your style and expectations and limit chances of miscommunication! What “natural” means to one person might mean something completely different to another, so describing what you love about a photo will ensure you have the same vision.

Get your nails done and your engagement ring cleaned

It’s all in the details. Photographers love taking close up photos of your hands to show the connection between you and your partner – and of course to feature that ring of yours! Plan ahead and treat yourself to a manicure. Not only will it make your photos look amazing but it’s the perfect excuse for a pre-wedding pamper session with your friends. If you love the natural look, a fresh manicure with clear polish will add shine. Or you can keep it beautiful with soft pink lacquer or perhaps French tips. Want to make your ring stand out? Opt for a bright colour for that funky finish.

Wear something comfortable that reflects who you are

Weddings are a fantastic opportunity to get all dolled up and look utterly glamorous. The photography focussed on you and your partner, but also the details of the day, and all your family and friends. Engagement sessions, on the other hand, are the epitome of beautiful and relaxed photography. They’re all about you and your partner – just the way you are. So whether you go out and buy something new or wear something you already have, make sure you pick something that makes you feel great! After all, who doesn’t melt over, “I like you very much, just as you are” – thanks, Mark Darcy! #Swooning #parntergoals

Get your hair or make-up trial done on the same day

Let’s face it – seeing is believing! Just as an engagement shoot will give you confidence in your photographer’s ability, a makeup or hair trial is great to give you confidence in choosing the perfect bridal look. By getting it done on the same day as your engagement shoot, you’ll be able to see how your bridal style photographs and it will make you feel like a million dollars.

Talk to your photographer about your reservations

Are you camera shy? Don’t like PDAs? Or perhaps you have a “good side” you prefer to be photographed from. Let your photographer know and they’ll help you through the process to make sure you not only look great but feel great too.

Be yourself! Laugh, play and kiss your partner like you would on a date.
Our top tip for getting photos you will love is to relax and be yourself on your engagement shoot. Forget about everything else and just enjoy spending this quality time with the one you love. You can even treat it as a real date. Grooms take note – surprise her with flowers or cuddle up on a picnic rug with a bottle of champagne. Soon you’ll be too busy having fun that you won’t even notice us there.
