Real Wedding: Ashleigh & Shaune

After entering a competition at the Queensland Brides Wedding and Honeymoon Expo, Ashleigh and Shaune Kelly couldn’t believe their luck when their prize was a dream wedding package in tropical Airlie Beach! As clouds gathered, the bride and groom didn’t let it put a dampener on their day – Ashleigh recalls running through the rain while taking photos as one of her most special memories.

How did you meet?

We met through a mutual good friend.

Tell us about the proposal…

We were away on Holidays for our five year anniversary in Lennox Heads. We went for a walk upto pat Morgan lookout the day before our anniversary, there were so many stairs! The next day on our way home (on our anniversary) he made me pull over at the lookout and said he wanted to go back up! I really did not want to go back up there! He pretty much had to drag me up these stairs/hill… We got half way and he took me off the pathway, I had no idea what was going on.. Until he knelt down on one knee and proposed!

Why did you choose Airlie Beach for your wedding?

I was very undecided about the location of our wedding… until I won this amazing package! It made the decision so much easier and I’m glad we went with it!

DIY Details

My step mum helped us out a lot with our DIY, we couldn’t have done it without her. We did our own invites, lolly bar, and decorations. We put together our thank you gifts and made an amazing sign that has read ‘pick a seat not a side’.

What gifts did you give your guests?

We did up little bottles with love heart chocolates in them with a ribbon around it with a personalised stamped love heart.

What was the funniest moment of the day?

There were so many moments throughout the day/night that made us both laugh, the moment that stands out the most rite now. Would have to be my father-in-law’s speech. He had Shaune put his hand on my hand, asked him to stare into my eyes and remember this moment for the rest of your life. Because this is the last time you will ever have the upper hand! Rosie got the photos at the exact right moment and I can’t look at them without bursting out laughing.

What was the most special memory from the day?

There are probably two that stand out. When my dad walked me down the aisle and I saw my husband for the first time and when we were running through the rain while we were having our photos done. Most people have said that the rain would have put a downer on it all but we both think that it made it that much better and if I could do it all again, I wouldn’t change the weather!

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We had the most amazing honeymoon, we spent seven nights in Phuket and two nights in Bangkok. It was the first time for us both traveling and was a real adventure! We rode elephants, went to Phi Phi Island and fed and played with the tiger cubs at the tiger temple.
