Real Wedding: Dora and Tim

  |

It’s the first of its theme we’ve ever come across at QB – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles meets vintage quirk! Dora Austen and Tim Smith made the marriage of themes work so beautifully, we were smitten. Not only was their day full of romantic styling and retro charm, there was a definite fun vibe in the air. The couple planned their wedding while apart – the groom was deployed to Afghanistan and helped his bride-to-be via Skype. We do so love a groom who’s committed to planning the big day!

How did you meet?

We met in our hometown of Coffs Harbour when Tim was on Christmas holidays from the Army. We kept in contact for months via FaceBook and phone as Tim was on field exercises until May.

Tell us about the proposal…

Tim proposed in Pacific Palms at sunset by the lake on New Year’s Day 2013. Tim had planned to propose New Year’s Eve, but we both slept through it.

Why did you choose Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery for your wedding?

Tim researched a lot of wedding venues while he was deployed to Afghanistan during 2013. We both loved the idea of a winery when it was cold so a fire could be used. We planned the majority of our wedding while Tim was deployed over Skype.

What did you do for your hens and bucks?

We both had separate parties on the same evening on the Gold Coast two days prior to our wedding. Tim and the bucks did a pub crawl throughout the town and the girls had a hotel room with entertainment, followed by Hummer rides and lots of dancing in town.

DIY Details

Tim is a huge fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so we had a lot of these details including  cufflinks and photo booth props.

Key Styling Inspiration

We both really like quirky styling so Etsy helped a lot. I love vintage and retro theming and tried to incorporate it within our wedding.

Where did you splurge and where did you save on your wedding?

We splurged on our accommodation at Pethers Rainforest Retreat and our honeymoon to Queenstown. We saved by using our cheese tiered cake as our favours.

What gifts did you give your guests?

We made personalised boxes for each guest to fill with our cheese tiered cake to take home to enjoy.

What was the funniest moment of the day?

Our best man. He needed prompting to give the rings out during the ceremony as he was too ‘caught up in the moment had tear gas in his eyes’. During the photo shoot he stole the venue’s transport golf buggie for a joy ride, so the staff and Tim had to chase him past the reception area. His speech at the reception is still a talking point amongst most of the guests where he renamed us ‘Tora’ in recognition to our celebrity status like ‘Brangelina’.

What was the most special memory from the day?

Listening to the introduction of our first dance song and getting ready to do our organised dance (the foxtrot) and stuffing up the steps so badly that Tim started twerking to save the dance.

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We travelled to Queenstown in NZ for a week. It was freezing, but we loved it.

Special thanks to…

Billeta our photographer. Honestly the most wonderful and warm person we could have had capture our wedding day.

What advice would you give other brides-to-be?

Keep calm. Things will go wrong. Don’t get hung up on negatives.
