Real Wedding: Eliza & Richard

Upon their first encounter on New Years Eve, it seemed serendipitous for Richard Linforth and Eliza Hawkins to celebrate their marriage at Cloudland in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. The spot held many dear memories including their initial meeting four years prior! The duo’s Brisbane wedding embraced the traditional and contemporary – from the bride’s Winnie Bridal gown, their lovely church ceremony and chic cocktail reception at the sophisticated venue.

How did you meet?

We met at a New Years Eve party at the start of 2011, at Cloudland in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley – it then became our reception venue!

Tell us about the proposal…

We chose my yellow diamond engagement ring together, and then Richie took me out to a seafood smorgasbord lunch at Morgan’s Seafood, Redcliffe. We then went for a walk and the normally very confident Richie was clearly nervous as we sat on a park bench overlooking the ocean and he asked me to marry him.

Why did you choose Broadway Chapel and Cloudland for your wedding?

We loved the beautiful heritage listed Broadway Chapel as soon as we visited it. The gold cherubs from the ceiling and beautiful arches gave it a magical feeling, and it was also very intimate for the number of our guests. Cloudland was perfect for our reception because it was where we had met four years earlier and the cellar was amazing for a cocktail reception. It offered plenty of seating in a very glamorous setting.

What did you do for your hens and bucks?

Richie and his friends went to Kakadu Resort in Darwin and did a crocodile tour and fishing charter. I went to Mooloolaba with my friends and enjoyed a degustation dinner at Spice Bar followed by cocktails on the waterfront.

DIY Details

The only DIY was our lolly buffet which turned out perfectly. It did take a bit more time than I expected it would, but was definitely worth the effort.

Key Styling Inspiration

We wanted a fresh summery feel, which is why we had such bright colours in the bridal party. As far as our reception venue went, we didn’t have to do much to the cellar at Cloudland, as the décor is so decadent already.

Where did you splurge and where did you save on your wedding?

As an accountant, I had a very detailed budget throughout the whole planning process. The area we splurged the most was our photography, but really it wasn’t overly expensive now that we have our photos and are so happy with them. It was definitely worth doing the research and paying a bit extra to make sure we had a great photographer. Because our engagement lasted almost 18 months, I saved by having enough time to buy accessories such as my beautiful Oroton clutch and Badgley Mischka shoes when they were on sale.

What gifts did you give your guests?

We didn’t have bombonieres as we didn’t have table settings. We provided the lolly buffet which we thought would be the same effect.

What was the funniest moment of the day?

The speeches were great. Both groomsmen had the guests roaring in laughter.

What was the most special memory from the day?

Definitely the ceremony. Walking down the aisle I was so nervous my whole body was shaking. The second Richie grabbed my hands I felt so relieved to be standing there with him. We both had written and memorised our own vows and it felt so meaningful saying them to each other off by heart.

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We went on a two week trip to Japan. We spent the first week skiing in Hakuba and the second week exploring Tokyo, trying as many different types of foods as we could find.

Special thanks to…

Our families. We had family come from all over Australia and the UK to be there for our day. It made it such a special occasion to us and we were so thankful to have them there.

What advice would you give future brides-to-be?

Put the time into research and planning. We didn’t have any dramas on our day, and besides from the perfect weather, it was definitely thanks to our thoughtful planning and selection of suppliers.
