Couple Real Weddings

Real Wedding: Erin & Matthew

  |

This whimsical couple could not have chosen a more appropriate venue to suit their perfect day. The beautifully rustic venue of Gabbinbar Homestead was located in the middle of the map of their two (but now one) families – how convenient! The quirky affair was enjoyed by all, in particular the groom’s father who was the star of the dance floor! We just love the fun involved in their big day, which greatly reflected such a fun-loving and beautiful couple.

How did you meet?

I left Tasmania to travel to WA working as a nurse. I started with a job in Kalgoorlie, a friend who had worked there previously gave me Matthew’s number to show me around. I invited him for lunch to say thank you and he left a bottle of mix up cordial for when he visits next time.

Tell us about the proposal…

I went on my morning run with our dog Lucy, Matthew walked our pup Auston the opposite way as he was still only a baby and I ran until I met up with him. It was a beautiful perfect blue sky on the beach, the ocean was a sheet of glass. Sweat was dripping of my nose, next minute he spun me around, got on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of his life with him, whilst our dogs were running around us.

Why did you choose Gabbinbar Homestead for your wedding?

We didn’t really know where we wanted to get married. We love the DIY homestead theme and we wanted to go back to Tasmania but the weather was too unpredictable. Looking on a blog one night, the Conservatory of Gabbinbar was featured, and we were sold. We had to look on the map to see where Toowoomba was, it was half way between two families…perfect.

What did you do for your hens and bucks?

Matthew had some friends around for the AFL grand final and I was thrown a surprise one. My beautiful friends organised a crazy surprise dress up road trip to Townsville where we partied the night away and then ran in the colour run the next day! I was blown away! It was the best time!

DIY Details

All of our decorations were DIY. Our jars, chalkboards, table runners and our bombonieres. We also made our own save the dates and invitations.

What was your key styling inspiration?

Fun, quirky, rustic and beautiful.

Where did you splurge and where did you save on your wedding?

We splurged on our location, food and photographer. We attempted to save by doing as much DIY as we could.

What gifts did you give your guests?

We made homemade bottles of strawberry jam.

What was the funniest moment of the day?

Matthew’s dads speech, he was so serious (which was out of character for him) then he just pulled his glasses off, expressed enthusiasm with his hand gestures, it was great! He had everyone in stitches. On the dance floor he decided he was hot and was dancing with his pants rolled up.

What was the most special memory from the day?

Seeing each other, what we had organised and how it had come together. Having our friends and family who we haven’t seen in so long together in the same place, it was just magical.

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We went to Port Douglas, Cape Tribulation and Cook Town.

Special thanks to…

Our parents, where would we be without them. Every one of our guests who travelled so far to be part of our special day. Our vendors, each and everyone of them made such a massive impact on what was our unbelievably perfect day.

What advice would you give other brides-to-be?

Enjoy the planning process as you will never get that time back and it lasts the longest.
