Real Wedding: Gemma & Tony

This stunning celebration has everything you want from a Gold Coast wedding – perfect weather, a flawless white-sand beach and a memorable entrance (the groom and his men arrived via paddleboards!) Photogenic pair Gemma Whitworth and Tony Miller-Greenman first met in medical school but reconnected while both interning at the Gold Coast Hospital. The GC proved to be a lucky charm with the couple choosing a local venue overlooking Tony’s favourite surf break.

How did you meet?

We met in medical school. There was a spark early on but we didn’t get together until we were working together at the Gold Coast Hospital in our internship four years later.

Tell us about the proposal…

After two years together, Tony and I travelled to the South Island of New Zealand with family to hike the Milford Track for five days. When we reached the summit of Mackinnon’s Pass Tony took me off track to the beautiful view of Mt Hart and proposed! It was a diamond passed down from his grandmother and we were able to then design the ring together. I was very surprised and I never knew he was such a romantic.

What did you do for your hens and bucks?

Gemma: The girls organised a high tea, organised for me to get my makeup done and then took me on a night out for tapas and drinks with my closest family and friends.

Tony: A weekend away in Byron Bay with the boys spent surfing and partying.

Why did you choose the Gold Coast for your wedding?

We always wanted a relaxed beach wedding. We chose Tallebudgera for the ceremony because the boys could paddle in there and it is one of our favourite spots to take our dog for a walk. We chose Oskars as the reception venue because we love the outlook over Burleigh beach and it is also Tony’s favourite surf break!

Key Styling Inspiration

A relaxed coastal feel.

Where did you splurge and where did you save on your wedding?

We splurged on our wedding venue. We saved by getting all of the reception flowers from the Brisbane flower markets. My mum made the place cards and we made the favours.

What was the funniest moment from the day?

The look of surprise on all of the guests faces when Tony and the groomsmen paddle boarded into the ceremony in their full suits. What a relief that they didn’t fall in!

What was the most special memory from the day?

The surprise video announcement that we were expecting our first baby! Everyone was so happy for us. It was such a fun way to reveal our exciting news.

Special thanks to…

my makeup artist – Amelda, who stood up last minute and gave up her only weekend off and did an amazing job. The makeup artist I had booked cancelled on the week of the wedding. Talk about stressful!

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We travelled to Port Douglas and Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, North Queensland. Two weeks of swimming, snorkelling and relaxing in paradise.

Do you have any advice for other brides-to-be?

Make sure you book things in early. Lots of vendors I enquired with were already booked 12 months or more out! Try to relax as much as you can. It really is the best day!
