Real Wedding: Katie and Scott

Starting with a romantic Christmas proposal in the United States of America, the smitten couple celebrated their love of travel and of course each other, with a dreamy destination wedding in the beautiful Whitsundays. Katie O’Hanlon and Scott Bennett kept the romance alive with simple, fun and relaxed decor, with the main styling focus kept on the breathtaking scenery and the Villa Botanica’s magical atmosphere.

How did you meet?

We met in April 2010 in the romantic offices of Russell Investments, Sydney Australia. During an interview for Russell Investments in Sydney Australia the side door swung open.  A handsome man with dark features walked in and reached out his hand to shake mine. “G’day, I’m Scott” he said. We locked eyes and there was an instantaneous chemistry.  He was my senior at work,so it was over a year before the relationship became established.  Nevertheless, there is absolutely no denying that from day one, we both knew, there was something special there!

Tell us about the proposal…

Scott proposed to me on Christmas day. I really don’t remember much because I was so excited! The next day we went to a cute bavarian town just one hour from Seattle.Surrounded by Christmas lights and snow topped mountains, we celebrated the beginning of forever.

What did you choose Airlie Beach for your wedding?

We live in Seattle so we were thinking about places like Hawaii or Mexico. Ultimately we thought it was important to get married in Australia where we are both from. We still wanted that holiday feel so the Whitsundays was perfect because it is so close to Melbourne and Sydney where most of our family and friends live. It allowed our guests to really get to know each other and build new friendships, because there were events throughout the entire week, rather than just the one day.

Key Styling Inspiration

We both wanted the wedding to be really simple, fun, relaxing and romantic.  Ultimately, it was just about bringing together everyone that we love and celebrating our love and life together. With the incredibly beautiful venue and scenery, you really don’t need much more! We tried to keep the decor minimal and simple.

Where did you splurge and where did you save on your wedding?

We wanted to make sure we chose an amazing venue because we knew it would set the scene for the whole evening. Villa Botanica is a dream destination so we splurged on this. We got lucky enough to find it online, and we didn’t need to see or hear anymore – that was our venue! It wasn’t really deliberate but we were able to save a lot on wedding décor because the venue is so beautiful.  In fact, having too much would have taken away from the natural beauty.

What gifts did you give your guests?

We made our guests little favour bags which told our love story.  We put five items in each gift bag and every item represented something about Scott and I.

What was the funniest moment of the day?

I accidentally cursed during my vows! To make me feel less alone, my husband threw a swear word into his vows as well.

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We had the most amazing honeymoon in Europe.  We started in the Greek Islands which was a bucket list  destination for both of us. We then flew to Madrid and rented a little car which we drove down the south of Spain, the French Riviera and onto Monaco. In total, we visited four countries and twenty two cities! It was absolutely incredible and a trip we will always remember.

What was the most special memory from the day?

The whole day was just the most special memory of our lives.

Do you have any advice for other brides-to-be?

I know it sounds simple and easy, but so often, brides get so caught up in all of the details of the day, and trying to make everything perfect, that they miss out on the magic.  Being engaged is such a special time, and so is planning the wedding.
