Real Wedding: Myl and Dean

  |

There was a collective sigh of happiness in the QB office when we came across Myl and Dean’s stunning wedding. And can we say that it’s a pretty rare that a cake decides the entire theme of the wedding? The bride – a cake creator herself – decided on the silver and dusty ivory theme after dreaming of a cake with just those tones. Between the modern colour and the impeccable styling, it was bound to be a special day that was nothing short of magical…

How did you meet?

We met at a mutual friend’s birthday in 2009 and Dean caught my eye when he came to visit me at my parent’s charity event held 40 minutes away from his home. I was so surprised and was instantly impressed. Needless to say, he impresses me every day.

Tell us about the proposal…

Dean took me to Sirromet Winery ( my favourite place!) on New Year’s Eve Day. It was a dreary day but he insisted we go and have a picnic. After we shared our cheese platter and wine, Dean asked “darling, what was your New Year’s resolution this year?”. Dean replied “one of my resolutions was to make you my fiancé.” He then got on one knee told me the reasons why he wanted to marry me and popped the question! As this unfolded, a party of ten children ran towards the playground we were sitting next to and watched it all happen. Two little girls cried and they clapped!

Why did you choose The Greek Club for your wedding?

I chose the Greek club, because I had seen many weddings held there. They looked grand and magical. I wanted our wedding to be remembered as something great. The start of our lives together and we weren’t going to spend all this money for people to forget it (it also fit 400 people and had a good-sized dance floor).

What did you do for your hens and bucks?

For my hens, my bridesmaids blindfolded me in the car as they picked me up on a Friday night. I was blindfolded the whole way and found myself at the terminal to Sydney! They booked a hotel and I had the most wonderful time in Sydney partying at VIP functions and getting pampered. It was a weekend to remember.

Dean’s bucks was organised by the best man (my brother) and he booked out one of the biggest luxury houses in the Gold Coast. All of Deans friends were invited and they had the whole weekend to themselves, chilling, sun baking and partying. Just the boys. It sounded amazing!

DIY Details

Table numbers, name tags, bombonnieres, Menu’s & Thank you Cards were all made by one of my amazing and talented bridesmaids Thuy. She has the best eye for detail and to cater for 400people was unbelievable. Wouldn’t have been able to do it without her. My bridesmaids all made up the bombonieres after I had ordered the boxes, candy and stickers online.

The cake was made by myself. As I’m a cake designer and maker I would die before I would let anyone else make it! I had actually wanted a blush and gold themed wedding but loved to design a silver and ivory cake for myself. I just loved the look. So really, I based the wedding theming around my cake!

Key Styling Inspiration

I was torn between a formal rustic themed wedding with the gold, blush and coloured flowers everywhere or a silver and ivory themed cake. I decided to go with the classic modern, silver and ivory look.

Where did you splurge and where did you save on  your wedding?

We splurged on the styling of the room. The ceiling draping and chandeliers were the most expensive. My dress, the bridesmaid dresses, shoes and the grooms tuxedo were also a chunk out of the budget.

We saved money on our tiffany chairs and centrepieces as they were included in our wedding package at the Greek Club. We saved on making the cake myself and our stationery  was a DIY labour of love from one of my bridesmaids.

What gifts did you give your guests?

We gave each of our guests a clear box of personalised strawberries and cream candy with Myl & Dean on each of the candy pieces. We then finished it off with a customised sticker printed from Zazzle in the US.

What was the funniest moment of the day?

Toward the end of the night when I turned around from speaking to some guest and found my whole bridal party dancing on top of their chairs and the crowd of guests dancing back at them on the dance floor. My brother was pretending to be a DJ, performing in front of a crowd.

Dean also started twerking outside the cathedral after our ceremony while we were taking bridal party photos!

What was the most special memory from the day?

For Dean, when I sang for him. He was so surprised and he cried the whole way through. He had always begged me to sing for him at our wedding, for the past three years I had said no (definitely not confident in singing in front of people, so it was a big ask!) and the whole time I had planned to sing for him as I knew this would be the best present ever.

For me, when we were in our hotel room after it was all over. We just sat on the bed drinking Champagne and talking about the day that had past so quickly. I had never been so happy at that moment. Just us alone and talking about the day that had just happened through our own perspective. It was truly amazing.

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We haven’t had our honeymoon yet, because our lives are quite busy and we plan to buy a house soon. But we want to save the honeymoon to go on a big trip. I plan to show Dean America, New York, visit our cousins in Canada and LA!
