Tegan + Marty: bright, breezy and beautiful

For loved-up Tegan and Marty, a simple engagement was never on the cards. Determined to surprise his gorgeous girlfriend of 10 years, Marty devised the perfect proposal… but then Mother Nature stepped in.

“He spent months planning an epic proposal for me and was going to pop the question at the top of my favourite lookout in our home town of Yeppoon,” says Tegan. “Along the way my friends and family would pop out, holding signs printed with love quotes. Waiting at the top would be Marty – who was going to get down on one knee and propose – and our dog, Rasta.”

The special day arrived… and so did a cyclone. And not just any cyclone, but the Category 5 Cyclone Marcia. Oh dear. “After the worst of it was over, my dad and I went for a quick drive to check on the damage at my house. While we were away Marty and my friends set up candles all through the house,” says Tegan. “Instead of holding up the quotes, they laid them on the floor and made a path for me to follow, leading me to Marty, who was on one knee. It was the most amazing moment.” Nice save, Marty.

Thankfully, the weather was perfect and sunny when Tegan walked down the aisle a year later. She wore a stunning gown from Paddington Weddings that she loved so much she even wrote a little poem for designer, Anne Bertossi:

A dress made just for me,
A dress so special and unique
A dress that sparkles and shines,
A dress that is mine

A dress made with such love and care,
A dress that was so elegant and easy to wear
A dress made with the finest lace,
A dress that brings a smile to any face

The dress I wore on my biggest day,
Was the dress of my dreams in every way
Perfectly fitted and perfectly stitched
The perfect dress for getting hitched

After tying the knot on a deck overlooking the ocean at Keppel Bay Sailing Club in Yeppoon, Tegan and Marty celebrated the occasion with a beautiful reception in the venue’s Commodore Room. “We did all the styling ourselves,” says Tegan. “We decorated Moët bottles for the centrepieces and had scented candles as our gifts to guests – their amazing scent filled the air and our reception smelt like vanilla.”

Dancing the night away with their family and friends, the couple’s MC – Tegan’s uncle – gave them a brilliant surprise. “Uncle Brett knows I love movies and acting, so he themed the whole night like the Oscars,” says Tegan. “He even awarded Marty and me an Oscar for the being the most glamorous couple. He also did three costume changes and it added such a fun spin to the night. It was perfect – we created memories that we’ll treasure forever.”
