5 reasons you’ll love a cool-season (autumn and winter) wedding

Tips + Advice // by QB

Once upon a time, tying the knot in the ‘wedding season’ meant a spring or summer wedding. Well, the times they are a-changin’. Thanks to favourable weather and gorgeous styling trends, the cooler months are ideal for saying ‘I do’. Curious? We’ve rounded up five compelling reasons you’ll love an autumn or winter wedding.

1. Blue skies shining on me

You’d be forgiven for thinking that summer was the best time of year for sunny blue skies, but winter is actually your safest bet in Queensland. With cooler temperatures and less humidity, the March-to-August period experiences fewer storms and rainfall, making setting a date for your special day less stressful.

Worried about the big chill with an autumn or winter wedding? The thermometer usually sits at a lovely 21°C during the day (no shivering guests!), but you can always add a stylish layer to your wedding look if it’s a little fresh outside – very chic.

2. Beat the crowds

Too often, we hear of couples finding their dream venue only to discover that it’s completely booked out for spring and summer – for the next three years! Our advice? Ask about autumn and winter wedding date!

Popular venues may have a little more flexibility, with many couples planning an October peony-filled celebration. The bonus? You might even score a discounted rate thanks to your off-peak timing.

3. Don’t sweat it!

Awkward sweat patches, clingy fabrics, the need to stake out a venue’s best spot for air-conditioning – there’s no denying that Queensland’s humidity creates a few challenges for you and your guests.

With a wedding in the cooler months, you’ll avoid the sticky situation altogether and be able to embrace a few fashion trends. Grooms, three-piece suits are huge right now and are – quite literally – made for autumn and winter. Brides, illusion sleeved and high-necked dresses are favourites that you can totally pull off in autumn and winter.

4. Belly-warming fare

We’ll never say no to hearty, carb-loaded comfort food. Old-school roast veggies, slow-cooked meats, fragrant curries and plates loaded with crusty bread – what’s not to love? You’ll win over friends and family when you serve up a generous winter feast and make your reception feel like a love-filled family gathering.

Want to keep the atmosphere (and spirits, pun intended) warm throughout the festivities? Keep your guests warm at a winter reception by offering up whisky-spiked tipples and impress kidults with an indulgent hot chocolate bar for dessert.

5. On-trend styling

Let the cooler climate inspire you to add a little winter styling to your special day for a wedding that’s tastefully glamorous. Velvet textures, rich gem tones and masses of flickering candles lend themselves to March-to-August celebrations.

All about the florals? The cooler season also delivers its own beautiful blooms, like anemones, freesias, jonquils, poppies, phalaenopsis orchids, ranunculus, dahlias, stocks and roses.
