Looking for a way to dazzle with your first wedding dance? Get your skates on and roll back in time for this super-fun, disco-inspired wedding shoot. Putting a modern spin on the carefree spirit of the 70s, this team of wedding creatives really got their groove on transforming Brisbane’s Lightspace studio into a wonderland of mirror balls and magic. Three couples took to the floor under the expert guidance of Kylie from Wedding Dance Diva, who takes us behind the sequined curtain for all the details …

That 70s mood
Our vision was to create an unforgettable experience where every element radiates with a mesmerising allure, immersing you in the dazzling world of the 70s. At the heart was our First Dance: a concept that intertwined the iconic songs of the era, from the soulful melodies of disco to the infectious rhythms of funk. We pictured this taking place beneath the glimmering sparkle of mirror balls and shimmering lights, enveloped by a vibrant colour palette. Lightspace was a perfect canvas, transformed with indoor sparklers, dancing-on-a-cloud effects, and over 40 mirror balls!

The modern update
We sought to infuse the carefree spirit of the 70s with a modern touch of sophistication and glamour. Our colour palette diverged from the traditional mustard, yellow, and brown, breathing new life into the era with vibrant pops of pink, purple, orange, yellow, and red. The juxtaposition of soft feathers and dazzling sequins and tinsel created stunning arbors, centerpieces, and bouquets that captured the eye.

Retro meets boho
The beauty of the off-shoulder, lace boho gown and the sparkling allure of the full sequin gown perfectly encapsulated our bridal visions. Our hair & makeup looks ranged from beehive bouffants to disco divas and boho flower crowns, each with a distinct charm reminiscent of the 70s. Embracing classic elements of the era, we featured a Champagne tower and a vintage-style telephone guest book, adding an air of nostalgia and whimsy. Our take on the Lambeth-style vintage wedding cake was adorned with buttercream scallops, frills, and swirls in our concept colours.

Night fever
No 70s shoot would be complete without iconic elements like a classic Kombi Van (serving as the perfect photo booth backdrop) alongside fresh roller skates, funky lighting, and giant light-up letters to set the mood. As the night unfolded, we channelled John Travolta’s Stayin’ Alive moves, formed conga lines, and belted out favourites like YMCA. For a unique twist, we traded the conventional sparkler exit for a roller-skating groove train.
