Wedding trends 2019: Detailed cakes

Hold on to your cake knives because 2019 promises a sweet shake-up — more intricate, more inventive, and more icing. Highly textured or painted fondant finishes (especially splashes of ‘watercolour’) are still gaining momentum.

Also, look out for low-line letter cakes, cut into the shape of your monogram and finished with an elaborate mix of flowers, fruit, cream and meringue. Yes please. Individual cake canapés, drip finishes (yes, still can’t get enough) and gold detailing are all set to take a starring role with the chic, but sometimes divisive, black cake making a return. It’s not the chalkboard style this time, but more of a sheer architectural look, finished with paint or florals.

You can also expect to see more than one cake adorning reception tables in the new year as the cake table look continues to find favour. And if you really can’t find your sweet spot, just remember, fresh flowers never go out of style. Seeking inspiration? Scroll below to find plenty of sweet ideas…
